Videos to launch this year’s Guess the Theme Competition!

This year, for the first time, we’re working on super short videos to kickstart the competition. We’ll be realeasing the videos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to encourage people to get guessing the theme. The videos will be short and snappy, and deliver a wee bit of background on this year’s poster characters.

We hope this, along with an exciting prize, will encourage young people to send us more guesses than ever. They should also help young filmmakers and school groups to start thinking of ideas for their own films.

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been working with cameraman Alasdair MacLean (who is also one of our workshop tutors) to put all three videos together.

We began on a gorgeous day at Ostaig Beach, with the wonderful Izzy Flower as a model! Izzy is from Dunbar, but she made the move to Edinburgh to be able to learn Gaelic at James Gillespie’s High School in S6 and hasn’t looked back since. She’s studying French and Gaelic at Glasgow Uni and has just completed a year at Sabhal Mòr, following a year in France. Not only did she look stunning, she was even willing to spend some time in the rather chilly Sound of Sleat while we got some photos. The second location of the day was much cosier – Bannan’s Café Strùpag, which we took over for the afternoon!

We were delighted that SkyeDance were up for working with us on the second of our videos, with Manager and Teacher Meara putting together two excellent routines for us! The dancers were brilliant, not least Niamh MacKinnon who played the lead role. Niamh is sitting National 5 in Gaelic and Drama so this was excellent practice! We were also joined by Portree High School S6 pupils, Kirsty Dibble and Josh Harrigan.

The last of our videos was shot late at night with Colm Boyd, who is backhome in Sleat after spending some time in Japan working as a ski instructor.  We filmed in the office of achitecture firm Dualchas and with some clever projections were able to change the feel of the space considerably.

The footage looks great so far, and it’s been great fun working on these videos. Watch this space come the end of June and get set to send in your guesses!
