After the carnage of wars the community operated boats shrunk in size and numbers. By the 1980’s they had disappeared from the Westside of Lewis - leaving only rotten planks in the long grass and half remembered fragments of song. Ten years ago everything changed. Community clubs were established all over Scotland, fundraising, building and launching 5 person seagoing St Ayles Skiffs ; repairing the broken bond with the ocean and coast that had lasted centuries. Now you can see young women lead crews of all ages, rediscovering and exploring this wild coastline. As they row you can hear them singing those songs once again.
